"Bareskrim Asked to Cease News Source Criminalization"

Anti-corruption activists urged the Police Criminal Investigation Unit (Bareskrim) to stop criminal inquiries against news sourcepersons speaking in the media. They maintain that these libel examinations are irrelevant for a criminal investigation. Today, Bareskrim questioned two commissioners from the Judicial Commission (KY), Suparman Marzuki and Taufiqurrohman Syahuri, as well as two Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW) activists, Adnan Topan Husodo and Emerson Yuntho. KY leaders were questioned as suspects in a defamation case reported by South Jakarta District Court judge, Sarpin Rizaldi. In the meantime, Adnan and Emerson were questioned for a defamation case reported by law professor Romli Atmasasmita.

Since its launch on Wednesday (22/7), an online petition supporting the Head of Bareskrim, Commissioner General Budi Waseso had received 10,717 signatures. However, on Sunday (26/7) morning, only 3,749 signatures were recorded. Change.org online petition administrator had apparently removed thousands of 'suspicious' signatures.

This afternoon, the legal team representing prominent lawyer Otto Cornelis Kaligis filed a pretrial appeal against Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) in South Jakarta District Court. Team member Afrian Bondjol explained that their team filed a number of lawsuits of administrative misconduct, ranging from the subpoena to the arrest of Kaligis.

The selection committee for KPK leadership initiated the third phase of candidate selection with a two-day profile assessment at the Ministry of Health Training Center in Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta. During this agenda, Pansel will assess the capacity of the remaining 48 candidates to lead the anti-graft body.

Directorate of Corruption Investigation (Dittipikor) at Bareskrim had named Governor Junaidi Hamsyah as a suspect in a corruption investigation. The Governor of Bengkulu was implicated in an alleged corruption for issuing an order of honorarium payments for M Yunus State Hospital Advisory Team in Bengkulu.

Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) and National Awakening Party (PKB) agreed to support an ex-convict of corruption, Soemarmo Hadi Saputro to come forward as a candidate for Mayor in the forthcoming Semarang City Election. Soemarmo was a former convict in bribery of Semarang City 2012 budget draft (RAPBD). The case of the former mayor who first carried PDIP was handled directly by the Commission.

Attorney General's Office (AGO) is investigating a number of alleged fat bank accounts implicating eight heads of regions. However, the Attorney General surmised that not all reports released by the Indonesian Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK/INTRAC) could be developed, investigated and processed in court. Each of PPATK's reports still require further analysis.

The High Attorney (Kejati) of South and West Sulawesi (Sulselbar) is to cooperate with Provincial Audit Office (BPKP) of South Sulawesi in order to investigate state losses in an alleged corruption in procurement of two elevator units at the State Finance Building of the Ministry of Finance, South Sulawesi. Investigators estimate a potential state losses of around Rp 800 million.
